Guwahati: The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned a Final Location Survey (FLS) for the proposed doubling of the New Coochbehar–Golakganj–Gauripur–Abhayapuri railway section, spanning 152.31 km. The survey, approved at an estimated cost of ₹3.65 crore, marks a significant step toward enhancing rail infrastructure and boosting line capacity along this crucial corridor.
The section serves as an important route for Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), connecting North Bengal with Lower Assam and supporting both passenger and freight traffic. With rising travel demand and increasing goods movement, capacity augmentation has become essential. The sanctioned FLS will evaluate these requirements and guide detailed planning for the doubling project.

The survey will include an in-depth study of geographical features, soil and terrain conditions, bridges, tunnels and other engineering components. Based on these findings, a comprehensive report will be submitted to the Ministry of Railways for further approval.
Once implemented, the doubling project is expected to significantly improve train operations, reduce congestion, strengthen regional supply chains and contribute to economic growth across the area.
Northeast Frontier Railway stated that it will continue undertaking surveys and studies to modernise infrastructure and enhance the safety, efficiency and overall quality of rail services for the public.
