SIT to Be Filed Chargesheet on December 12

Guwahati: With the deadline approaching for the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) probe into the death of cultural icon Zubeen Garg, Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta on Saturday confirmed that the investigation is “almost complete,” with more than 300 witnesses examined so far.

Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Gupta said the chargesheet will be submitted to the court on December 12. “The details will be given in the charge sheet. So far, 300 witnesses have been examined and seven arrests have been made,” he said. Declining to reveal further information, he added that a single chargesheet will be filed under case 18/2025, and more clarity will follow once it is placed before the court.

Zubeen Garg died on September 19 while swimming in the sea in Singapore, triggering widespread grief across Assam and the Northeast. On Friday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed that the SIT had compiled nearly 3,500 pages of documents relating to the case, emphasising that timely submission is crucial. “We should receive the documents before December 18; otherwise, the accused currently in jail will become eligible for bail,” he said.

Sarma had earlier stated in the Assembly that Garg’s death was a case of murder, a conclusion reached within the first three days of the investigation, which began on September 23. The accused have been booked under BNS Sections 61, 105, and 106, and the government has urged the Gauhati High Court to add Section 103 (equivalent to former IPC 302).

“Preliminary investigation confirmed it was not negligence but murder,” the Chief Minister reiterated, expressing confidence in the SIT’s findings.
