Nagaon Administration Launches Major Eviction Drive to Reclaim Encroached Wetlands in Dhing

The Nagaon district administration on Tuesday began a large-scale eviction operation in the Dhing area, targeting nearly 2,000 bighas of illegally occupied wetland land in one of the biggest such drives undertaken in the region in recent years. The move is aimed at recovering government-owned land and restoring ecologically important water bodies that have faced gradual encroachment over time.

Officials said the operation is focused on clearing unauthorised settlements from three major beels under the Dhing Revenue Circle. These wetlands are considered crucial for maintaining ecological balance and reducing flood risks in the area, prompting the administration to prioritise their restoration as part of a wider land recovery initiative.

To prevent any untoward incidents, extensive security arrangements have been put in place. Large contingents of police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed, and security camps have been established at three key locations across Dhing to maintain law and order throughout the eviction process.

The drive is being carried out simultaneously in several localities, including Salmabori, Bherbheri Beel, Tuktuki, Ahom Gaon, Kathaguri, Roumari Beel, Maira Dhaj and Magurmari Beel. Officials confirmed that the eviction began at around 9 am after all logistical and administrative preparations were completed.

According to the district administration, the operation has been planned in phases over four days—December 16, 17, 19 and 20—to ensure systematic clearance of the encroached areas. Speaking to the media, the Circle Officer of Dhing said the initiative is intended not only to reclaim government land but also to revive natural wetlands that play a vital role in the region’s environmental health.

Authorities have appealed to residents to cooperate with the administration, stressing that the eviction drive will continue as scheduled in the interest of ecological preservation and sustainable land management.
