Shock and anger gripped a neighbourhood in Sribhumi, Assam, after the body of a 60-year-old woman was discovered locked inside her residence on Neelmani Path on Tuesday, December 16, prompting police intervention and an official inquiry.
The deceased was identified as Shreyasi Roy, a local resident who, according to neighbours, had been unwell and was also suffering from mental health issues. Residents said that after her death, close relatives arrived at the house, performed a brief ritual by placing tulsi leaves on her eyes, locked the premises from outside and left the area.
As the house remained locked throughout the day with the body inside, suspicion and fear began to spread among neighbours. Concerned residents eventually informed the police after nightfall, questioning the circumstances under which the body had been left unattended.
Upon receiving the alert, police rushed to the spot, forcibly opened the locked house and recovered the body. It was later sent to Sribhumi Civil Hospital for necessary medical and legal procedures.
The alleged actions of the deceased woman’s relatives have sparked widespread resentment in the locality, with residents expressing outrage over the manner in which the situation was handled. Police officials said an inquiry has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the death and the conduct of the relatives, and further action will be taken based on the findings.
