James PK Sangma Elected President of Meghalaya Cricket Association as New Apex Council Takes Charge

The landscape of cricket administration in Meghalaya entered a new chapter on December 21 following the conclusion of the Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) Apex Council elections. Former state cabinet minister James PK Sangma was elected as the association’s president, marking a significant transition in leadership for the sport within the region. Sangma assumes this role at a critical juncture where the MCA is increasingly focusing on the pillars of governance, infrastructure enhancement, and the expansion of grassroots development programs.

A diverse team of officials will support the new president in executing the association’s mandate. Rajiv Bareh has been elected as vice-president, while Rayonald Kharkamni makes a return to the Apex Council in the capacity of honorary secretary. The newly formed leadership team is rounded out by honorary joint secretary Mebanphira Swer, honorary treasurer Eddystone Shylla, and Apex Council member Chuba R Marak. This body represents a broad geographic cross-section of Meghalaya, a structure intended to ensure that cricket development remains balanced and inclusive across all districts of the state.

The election followed a structured timeline that began on November 19 with the formal issuance of the election notice. This was followed by the publication of the electoral roll on November 27 and the filing of nominations on December 1. While all initial nominations were deemed valid, the withdrawal of one candidate on December 2 paved the way for the finalization of the council. The electoral officer in charge of the proceedings confirmed that the entire process was conducted with transparency and fairness, adhering strictly to BCCI rules and drawing procedural inspiration from the Election Commission of India.

In his first remarks following the official declaration of the results, Sangma expressed that he felt both honored and humbled by his election to the presidency. He emphasized that the new mandate brings a serious responsibility to implement transparent governance and create better infrastructure for the state’s athletes. Sangma further noted his commitment to providing expanded opportunities for young cricketers throughout Meghalaya, stating his intention to foster strong collaborative relationships with the MCA membership, the BCCI, and various other stakeholders to advance the game.
