Imphal, Dec 23: Security forces arrested an active cadre linked to the banned RPF/PLA on Monday, December 22, in Imphal West district, dealing a fresh blow to extortion networks operating in Manipur. The accused, identified as Nongmaithem Narendra Meitei alias Banner (50), was taken into custody from his residence during a targeted operation, police officials said.
Narendra Meitei, a resident of Kumbi Makha Leikai who was currently staying at Kwakeithel Mayaikoibi Mamang Leikai under Lamphel Police Station, was arrested on charges of involvement in extortion activities. During the operation, security personnel recovered two mobile phones along with two SIM cards and an Aadhaar card from his possession. The seized items have been secured as evidence, and further investigation is underway to trace possible links and financial trails.
The arrest comes amid heightened concern over a spate of extortion attempts targeting petroleum retail outlets across the state. In response, Manipur Police convened a high-level review meeting at the Police Headquarters on the same day to assess and strengthen security arrangements for petrol pumps.
Chaired by the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), the meeting was attended by Superintendents of Police from affected districts as well as representatives of the Petroleum Dealers Association, Manipur. Officials reviewed existing protection measures and discussed vulnerabilities faced by retail outlets.
Police authorities assured stakeholders that security would be significantly reinforced in the coming days. Measures announced include the deployment of mobile police teams at strategic locations, intensified anti-extortion operations and the vetting of all employees working at petroleum retail outlets to prevent internal facilitation of criminal activities.
In recent days, police have already arrested two other individuals in connection with extortion cases involving petrol pumps. Officials said efforts are continuing to identify and apprehend additional suspects, underlining the department’s resolve to curb organised extortion and restore confidence among business owners in the state.
