Shillong Police impose traffic curbs in Khyndailad for New Year celebrations

Shillong, Dec 30: Shillong Police announced traffic restrictions in the Khyndailad area, including Police Bazaar, in view of a large influx of visitors expected for New Year celebrations.

Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said the area would be declared a no-entry zone for vehicles from 5 pm on December 31 to manage congestion and ensure public safety amid heavy footfall. Vehicular movement towards Police Bazaar will be prohibited, with traffic diverted at Kachari Point towards Raj Bhawan Junction.

Vehicles coming from Umsohsun Junction along GS Road will be diverted towards Boucher Road and Motphran. Parking will be allowed only on one side of the road along designated stretches, including Centenary Junction to Rap’s Mansion Junction and Pinewood Junction to the Botanical Garden.

Police advised travellers, particularly those arriving from Guwahati and other parts of the Northeast, to avoid peak hours, use alternative routes and follow park-and-walk arrangements while entering the city. Emergency service vehicles will be permitted during the restrictions.

The advisory comes as Shillong witnesses heightened festive footfall, with Khyndailad and other parts of the city illuminated since Christmas and public spaces decorated for New Year celebrations.
