Bongaigaon: Assam Minister Ranjit Kumar Das today attended a Panchayat-level workshop organised on an Abhayapuri Assembly constituency basis in Bongaigaon district, where he underscored the importance of accountability in grassroots governance and made strong political assertions ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections.
Addressing the gathering, the minister cautioned against proxy representation in Panchayats, particularly instances where elected women presidents remain absent and are instead represented by their husbands or male relatives. He said that such practices undermine democratic functioning and urged Panchayat members to take appropriate steps to ensure that elected representatives personally attend meetings and discharge their duties. He called upon citizens and Panchayat functionaries to remain vigilant and uphold the sanctity of local self-governance.
Commenting on criticism from the opposition, Das stated that responses to Congress statements should be handled at the mandal level, asserting that his party does not engage in misleading rhetoric. “We believe in fulfilling our promises word for word,” he said, reiterating the government’s commitment to delivery-based governance.

Turning to the political landscape, the minister expressed strong confidence in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ahead of the next Assam Assembly elections. He claimed that the NDA would secure a decisive mandate, predicting that the alliance would win no fewer than 90 seats, and could even secure between 90 and 98 seats in the upcoming polls. The workshop focused on strengthening Panchayat-level institutions, enhancing public participation, and improving the effectiveness of grassroots governance mechanisms across the constituency.
