Bajali: A 15-year-old schoolboy from Bajali district has won widespread admiration for his creativity and innovation after building fully functional electric toy models using simple, locally available materials such as bamboo and cardboard boxes. Rahul Talukdar, a Class 9 student of Swahid Akhendra Uccha Madhyamik Vidyalaya, has crafted working electric models of Chandrayaan-3, a JCB, tractor, dumper, jeep, ship, camera stand and several other vehicles. His creations have impressed teachers, local residents and visitors alike for their ingenuity and sound technical understanding.
Hailing from Doloi Gaon–Halgiri Ghat village, Rahul comes from a financially modest family. His father, Dipak Talukdar, is an e-rickshaw driver, while his mother, Kanaklata Talukdar, manages the household. Despite limited resources, Rahul has shown a keen interest in science, mechanics and innovation from an early age, teaching himself basic engineering and electrical principles through observation and experimentation. Inspired by India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission and the agricultural and construction machinery commonly seen in rural life, Rahul has transformed everyday materials into impressive working models through curiosity and dedication. Alongside his interest in innovation, he also plays the traditional Nagara drum at various programmes, earning a small income to support himself.

Teachers and residents have described his achievement as a matter of pride for Bajali and a reminder of the untapped talent in rural Assam. Many believe that with proper guidance, mentorship and support, Rahul has the potential to grow into a future engineer or scientist. Locals and educators have appealed to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu to recognise Rahul’s talent and provide opportunities to help nurture and showcase such rural innovations on a larger platform.
