Apollo Excelcare Hospital Saves Life and Limb Through Advanced Cancer Care

Guwahati: Apollo Excelcare Hospital, Guwahati, has successfully treated an 18-year-old patient diagnosed with osteosarcoma of the distal femur, achieving complete disease control while preserving the affected limb. The case highlights the hospital’s advanced multidisciplinary approach to cancer care and its growing capability in performing complex limb salvage surgeries in the Northeast.

The patient initially reported persistent leg pain following a minor fall. A timely evaluation by Dr. Arpita Chakraborty from the Department of Internal Medicine led to further investigations, including imaging and biopsy, which confirmed bone cancer. The patient was subsequently referred to the oncology team at Apollo Excelcare Hospital, Boragaon.

Under the supervision of Dr. Adil Hassan from Medical Oncology, the patient underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy and showed an excellent metabolic response on PET-CT scan. This was followed by a highly specialised limb salvage surgery using a modular prosthesis, performed by Dr. Kiran Kamalasanan from Surgical Oncology. The complex procedure, available at only a few centres in the region, allowed preservation of the limb and long-term mobility. Post-surgical histopathology confirmed a complete pathological response with clear margins, and the patient successfully completed adjuvant chemotherapy.

During the course of treatment, chemotherapy-related complications required intensive care support. These were managed through coordinated efforts of the Emergency, ICU and Internal Medicine teams, while structured physiotherapy played a key role in restoring functional movement.
