Himanta Biswa Sarma Targets Bhupesh Baghel Over Alleged Scams and Legal Cases

Guwahati, Jan 25: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday alleged that former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel was facing multiple serious cases even as he continued to visit Assam for political engagements.

Addressing the media, Sarma said Baghel was embroiled in controversies linked to the alleged liquor scam in Chhattisgarh, the Mahadev Betting App case and an obscene CD matter, describing these developments as a major setback for a leader of his standing.

The Chief Minister recalled that during the Chhattisgarh Assembly elections he had raised concerns over alleged financial transactions routed through the Mahadev Betting App. Sarma claimed the platform was used to transfer large sums of money abroad, including to Dubai.

He further alleged that several members of Baghel’s family had already been arrested in connection with the betting app case and that investigations against the former Chief Minister were ongoing.

Sarma also referred to allegations related to the liquor scam that emerged during Baghel’s tenure as Chief Minister, saying the cases had continued to cast a shadow over the former Chhattisgarh government.

Highlighting the alleged obscene CD case, Sarma said Baghel had earlier received interim relief from a magistrate court while in office, but a recent order by a CBI special court had allowed proceedings to continue.

“Yesterday’s order by the CBI special court makes it clear that the case will proceed, which is undoubtedly a setback for a senior politician like Bhupesh Baghel,” Sarma said.
