Karbi Anglong: A 70-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday, police said. The deceased has been identified as Kasang Kropi. According to police sources, the incident occurred at Hijunglangsang village under the jurisdiction of Jirikideng police station. Kropi was returning home after attending a religious programme along with a group of other women when they suddenly encountered a herd of wild elephants on the way.

While the other women managed to escape and run to safety, one of the elephants reportedly attacked Kropi and trampled her, killing her on the spot. The sudden encounter left the local residents shocked and panic-stricken. Police said the body was later recovered from the spot and sent for post-mortem examination. Further investigation into the incident is underway. Meanwhile, forest and police officials have urged villagers in elephant-prone areas to remain cautious, especially during evening and early morning hours, as human–elephant conflicts continue to pose a serious concern in several parts of the state.
