ATDC plans Shakira concert in Dibrugarh to promote concert tourism

Dibrugarh: Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) is planning to bring global pop icon Shakira to Dibrugarh as part of the state’s new concert tourism initiative. Announcing the plans on Saturday, BJP state general secretary and ATDC chairman Rituparna Baruah said Khanikor Stadium has been proposed as the venue for the mega event.

Speaking to reporters, Baruah highlighted that the government recently launched a concert tourism policy aimed at developing Assam into a hub for high-profile events and attracting tourists through live entertainment. “We are trying to bring mega pop star Shakira to Dibrugarh in line with the state’s concert tourism initiative,” he said.

Baruah pointed to regional examples to underline the potential of concert tourism. He cited Meghalaya’s successful hosting of annual mega concerts, which significantly boosted tourism, and mentioned that a recent concert in Guwahati had received an overwhelming response.

“The proposed Dibrugarh concert is aimed at positioning the city as a key destination for event-led tourism,” Baruah said, adding that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance tourism infrastructure and attract both domestic and international visitors.

If realised, the Shakira concert would mark a major milestone in Assam’s efforts to integrate cultural events with tourism development, providing a platform for the state to showcase its hospitality, venues, and organizational capabilities to a global audience. The ATDC has stated that detailed plans regarding ticketing, security, and event logistics will be announced in the coming months as preparations for the concert gather pace.
