Tirap, Feb 3: In a significant development aimed at restoring peace and stability in Arunachal Pradesh’s insurgency-affected Tirap district, a cadre of the NSCN-K (Niki Sumi) group surrendered before security forces on February 3, officials said.
The surrendered militant, identified as SS Lt. Wangjong Wangsu, 37, Army No. 23149, laid down his arms at the office of the Superintendent of Police in Khonsa in the presence of personnel from the Tirap Police, the 44 Assam Rifles and the 36th Battalion of the CRPF.
Officials said Wangsu is the son of Jesan Wangsu and a resident of Longsom village under Longding police station in Longding district. His surrender is being viewed as an important breakthrough in the ongoing efforts by security agencies and the district administration to curb insurgent activities and bring lasting normalcy to the region.
Security officials described the move as a positive signal for peace initiatives in Tirap and neighbouring areas, noting that voluntary surrenders play a crucial role in weakening insurgent networks. They said such developments could motivate other misguided youths to renounce violence and return to the mainstream.
The security forces reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order in the district, while also assuring support for the rehabilitation and reintegration of those who surrender. The district administration, along with the security agencies, appealed to the public to extend cooperation in sustaining peace, stability and development in Tirap and adjoining districts, stressing that enduring normalcy depends on collective efforts and trust-building measures.
