Guwahati, Sep 16: Assam ACS officer Nupur Bora, a 2019-batch bureaucrat was arrested on Monday in connection with a corruption case involving alleged illegal land transfers in Barpeta.
Born on March 31, 1989, Bora joined the civil service in 2019 and was posted as a Circle Officer in Goroimari, Kamrup district when the CM’s vigilance cell swooped in on her Guwahati residences. The crackdown followed specific complaints that Bora had been hoarding unexplained wealth.
Raids conducted by the Chief Minister’s vigilance cell on two of Bora’s apartments in Guwahati’s Gotanagar area recovered nearly Rs 1 crore in cash along with diamonds and gold ornaments worth crores, police said adding she is currently in our custody.
Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the arrests, stating the action followed specific complaints about Bora hoarding cash and assets disproportionate to her known sources of income.
“The government received information that this official was allegedly facilitating the illegal registration of government and Satra land to suspicious individuals in exchange for money when she was posted in Barpeta. She has been on our radar for the last six months. We have taken strict action against her,” Sarma said.
Assam Police conducts multiple raids
Police also conducted searches at four other locations, including the Barpeta house of Bora’s alleged accomplice, Surajit Deka. Deka worked at the revenue circle office in Barpeta and has been accused of acquiring multiple land proprtties across Barpeta in collusion with Nupur Bora, when she was the circle officer. An additional ₹10 lakh was seized from Nupur’s rented house in Barpeta.
“The investigation is currently in progress. There are several allegations against the officer. We could seize more cash and other assets by the time the probe ends,” said Rosie Kalita, SP, CM Vigilance Cell, adding this is the 25th case registered with the vigilance cell.
