AAMSU Protests in Dhubri over Electoral Roll Irregularities

Dhubri: Tension prevailed in western Assam on Wednesday as the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) staged a massive sit-in demonstration in front of the Dhubri District Commissioner’s office, alleging large-scale irregularities in the ongoing Special Revision of electoral rolls and a failure of the administration to protect the rights of legitimate citizens. The protest saw intense sloganeering against the state leadership, with demonstrators targeting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and MP Dilip Saikia. Raising “murdabad” slogans, AAMSU leaders accused the government of misusing administrative processes to harass minority communities and create fear among genuine voters.

AAMSU alleged that the Special Revision exercise is being misused to question the citizenship status of Indian nationals without valid legal grounds. The student body claimed that eligible voters are being arbitrarily excluded from electoral rolls, while grievances raised at the local level are allegedly being ignored by officials. Addressing the gathering, AAMSU general secretary Alfaruque Asikur Rahman warned that the organisation would take legal action against Booth Level Officers and election officials if the alleged harassment of genuine citizens does not stop immediately. He further alleged that certain field-level officials are acting in a biased manner and violating constitutional provisions during the verification process.

A memorandum was submitted to the District Commissioner demanding strict action against officials accused of bypassing established legal procedures during field verification. The district administration maintained that the electoral roll revision is being conducted strictly as per Election Commission guidelines. However, AAMSU warned that it would intensify protests across Assam if its demand for a fair, transparent and impartial revision process is not met.
