Aaranyak Inspires Youth in Kaziranga–Karbi Anglong Through Birdwatching

Guwahati: In a bid to nurture environmental awareness and conservation values among the younger generation, Aaranyak, a leading biodiversity conservation organisation in Northeast India, has launched a guided birdwatching programme across the Kaziranga–Karbi Anglong landscape.

The initiative, targeting youth aged 10 to 19 years, is currently being implemented in four villages—Chandrasing Rongpi, Phumen Engti, Englepothar, and Sarbura Singnar. Introduced in January 2025, the sessions are conducted every Sunday from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM, enabling participation without disrupting school routines. So far, eight sessions have been successfully completed, engaging 59 young participants.

Led by bird guide Bhaskor Barukial and supported by Rangsina Phangcho, the programme teaches participants the basics of bird identification—emphasising shape, size, and colour—along with the proper use of binoculars and other field equipment. Weekly assignments encourage the recording of bird sightings, which are then shared during the Sunday sessions, fostering interactive learning and enhancing observational skills.

Through this initiative, Aaranyak aims to develop a new generation of community-based birdwatchers and conservation stewards, contributing to long-term biodiversity conservation in the region.

Supported by the IUCN and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the programme aligns with Aaranyak’s broader mission of protecting ecosystems, empowering indigenous communities, and promoting sustainable livelihoods across the Kaziranga–Karbi Anglong and Manas landscapes.
