Morigaon, August 16: All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) president Utpal Sarma on Independence Day demanded full implementation of every provision of the Assam Accord, saying it was essential for the survival of the Assamese community.
Addressing an AASU candle-lighting programme in Morigaon to remember those who died during the Assam Movement, Sarma said the organisation would not allow their sacrifices to go in vain.
“If the Assamese community is to survive, every provision of the Assam Accord has to be implemented. Our struggle will continue until the Accord is implemented in letter and spirit,” he said.
Sarma said the people of Assam would continue to fight for their rights and would not accept a situation where they were forced to “bow their heads and kneel before Bangladeshis” in their own homeland.
The AASU president warned the Assam government of fresh agitation if the provisions of the Assam Accord were not implemented.
