AASU Launches Statewide Agitation Demanding Justice for Zubeen Garg

Guwahati:  The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has announced a series of statewide protest programs demanding justice for late singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg, whose sudden demise has plunged Assam into mourning. The student body has unveiled a three-phase agitation to press for a fair and transparent investigation into the circumstances of the artist’s death.

According to AASU, the first phase — a sit-in protest — will be held on October 14 at prominent public venues in each district headquarters. This will be followed by a candlelight vigil on October 19, organized by regional units in local public spaces to pay tribute to the legendary musician. The agitation will culminate in a statewide “Nyay Samdal” (Justice March) on October 23, symbolizing the collective demand for accountability and truth.

AASU President Utpal Sharma and General Secretary Samiran Phukan reiterated the union’s core demands: Justice must be ensured for Zubeen Garg, The investigation should be swift, transparent, and thorough, All individuals found guilty must face exemplary punishment, A comprehensive chargesheet must be filed with solid evidence to prevent any miscarriage of justice.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the ongoing probe, AASU alleged major lapses in its handling. The union noted that although several individuals, including Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, and Shekhar Goswami, have been arrested, others associated with Zubeen’s care team and members of the Assam Association in Singapore have “escaped accountability” for what AASU termed a “serious and irreversible crime.”

The student body also questioned the Assam government’s failure to bring back key individuals from Singapore believed to be linked to the case, criticizing what it described as administrative inefficiency. It demanded strict action against anyone obstructing the investigation, including revocation of passports if necessary.

Clarifying its stance on Zubeen Garg’s personal assets, AASU stated that all movable, immovable, and intellectual properties should rightfully belong to his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and their family.

Concluding its statement, AASU affirmed that the people of Assam would “not remain silent until full justice is delivered” to their beloved artist, whose voice, the union said, “continues to echo in every Assamese heart.”
