ABVP stages protest at Assam University over alleged persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh

Guwahati, Dec 23: The Assam University unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a demonstration on December 22, protesting what it described as systematic persecution of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh.

The student organisation strongly condemned the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu garment factory worker who was allegedly burnt alive by a mob. ABVP members termed the incident a grave violation of human rights and claimed it reflected a worsening security situation for religious minorities in the neighbouring country.

During the protest, demonstrators burnt an effigy of Muhammad Yunus, accusing him of remaining silent on attacks against Hindu communities. The organisation alleged that such silence from influential figures emboldens extremist elements and contributes to a climate of fear and impunity.

The protesters also criticised remarks attributed to Sharif Osman Hadi, who reportedly spoke of a “Greater Bangladesh” that would include parts of India’s Northeast. ABVP described the statement as a direct challenge to India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Addressing the gathering, ABVP leaders asserted that the Northeast is an inseparable part of India and warned against any rhetoric or actions that threaten the region’s identity and unity. They called upon the Indian government and international human rights organisations to take cognisance of the situation and ensure protection for Hindu minorities in Bangladesh.

The demonstration concluded with appeals for unity against extremism and divisive ideologies, with ABVP reiterating its commitment to democratic values while opposing religious persecution.
