ACA Suspends Four Assam Cricketers, Files Police Case Over SMAT 2025 Corruption Allegations

The Assam Cricket Association has taken stringent action by suspending four cricketers and filing a police complaint after allegations of corrupt practices emerged during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025, underlining its resolve to safeguard the credibility of the game.

Those suspended — Amit Sinha, Ishan Ahmed, Aman Tripathi and Abhishek Thakuri — are players who have represented Assam at various levels. The association said they were accused of influencing, and attempting to influence, members of the Assam squad that featured in the domestic T20 tournament.

The matter was referred to the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit, which conducted an enquiry into the allegations. Following the findings, the ACA moved to initiate criminal proceedings and registered a first information report with the Crime Branch of the state police.

ACA secretary Sanatan Das said preliminary assessment indicated serious misconduct. He stated that the enquiry by the BCCI’s anti-corruption wing, coupled with the association’s own review, suggested prima facie involvement that could compromise the integrity of the sport, necessitating firm action.

Assam played its league-stage matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Lucknow between November 26 and December 8 but failed to qualify for the Super League stage of the competition.

The association clarified that the suspensions were imposed to prevent any further escalation while the investigation continues. The ban will remain in force until the probe reaches a conclusion or the ACA takes a further decision based on its outcome.

During the suspension period, the four cricketers are barred from taking part in any state-level tournaments or matches conducted by the ACA, its district units or affiliated clubs. They are also prohibited from engaging in any cricket-related role, including serving as coaches, umpires or match officials.

The ACA has instructed all district associations to strictly implement the order and ensure that clubs and academies under their jurisdiction are informed, signalling a zero-tolerance stance on actions that threaten the fairness and reputation of the game.
