AGP to Contest Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council Elections Independently, Ending Alliance with BJP

Guwahati: With the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council elections drawing near, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has announced that it will contest the polls independently, marking a significant political shift in Assam. The regional party has decided to field candidates in all 32 constituencies of the Council, effectively ending its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for this election.

As part of its preparations, AGP organised a workers’ meeting on Wednesday at Khowang Sonowal Bhawan in Dibrugarh district. The meeting was attended by AGP Central Committee Vice President and Chief Convenor of the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council Election Committee, Putul Sonowal, along with AGP Central Secretaries Sunil Rajkhowa and Parag Jyoti Barua. Several district and regional leaders and grassroots workers also participated in the event.

During the meeting, the party officially announced Jun Saikia as its candidate for the Khowang constituency, signalling the start of its campaign for the upcoming polls. Addressing the gathering, AGP leaders strongly criticised both the Congress and BJP administrations, accusing them of fostering corruption and neglecting the genuine development needs of the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council.

The leaders asserted that public trust in the current governance has eroded and that people are now turning towards AGP with renewed faith in its commitment to transparency, accountability, and regional progress.

Despite being part of the Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government, where AGP holds ministerial positions, the decision to contest the council elections independently marks a bold strategic move for the regional party. Political observers view this as an attempt by AGP to reassert its identity and reconnect with its traditional voter base, reshaping Assam’s regional political dynamics ahead of the elections.
