GUWAHATI, March 5: The Assam unit of the All India United Democratic Front is facing renewed internal turbulence after Zakir Hussain Laskar, the party’s MLA from Hailakandi, formally resigned from the organisation, adding to the political uncertainty surrounding the party ahead of the upcoming elections in the state.
Laskar confirmed his decision to step down from the party, although he has not publicly detailed the reasons behind his move. His resignation comes at a time when the party is already dealing with disciplinary action against two of its legislators, further intensifying the political churn within the AIUDF.
Earlier, the party’s central committee had suspended Abdul Aziz, MLA from Badarpur, and Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, who also served as the party’s vice-president, for a period of six years over alleged anti-party activities.
According to the suspension order, the AIUDF leadership had been closely monitoring the actions of the two MLAs, which it described as controversial and harmful to the party’s organisational interests. The party stated that their conduct had adversely affected its reputation and was considered a serious violation of party principles.
The order further alleged that both legislators were extending support to another political party and were preparing to switch allegiance. The disciplinary action was taken in accordance with provisions of the party constitution and was signed by AIUDF General Secretary (Administration) Hafiz Bashir Ahmed.
Subsequently, Barbhuiya announced through a social media post that he had decided to leave the AIUDF after consulting people from different sections of society.
With one MLA resigning and two others facing suspension, the developments highlight widening rifts within the AIUDF and underline the mounting political pressures facing the party as Assam’s political landscape begins to intensify ahead of the forthcoming electoral cycle.
