With the contest for three Rajya Sabha seats in Assam intensifying, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has formally sought support from the Indian National Congress.
Addressing the media on the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, AIUDF leader Rafiqul Islam said the party had written to the Congress, recalling past instances of political cooperation and urging it to reciprocate. He stated that the AIUDF had consistently extended support to the Congress during Presidential and Rajya Sabha elections, and that the time had come for the Congress to return the favour.
The party has proposed the candidature of its president, Badruddin Ajmal, for the Upper House. Islam argued that Ajmal’s presence in Parliament would be beneficial not only for Assam but also for the wider North-East region.
He further said that although the AIUDF had sought Congress’s backing, no response had been received so far, and urged the party to take a decision at the earliest.
The appeal comes amid shifting political equations in the state ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls. The elections to the three seats are being closely watched, as the outcome could significantly influence opposition alignments in Assam.
