AJP Steps Up Election Strategy as Opposition Alliance Discussions Gain Momentum in Assam

The Assam Jatiya Parishad has stepped up its preparations for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, signalling a sharper political push as the poll season approaches. The party held a key Central Executive Committee meeting in Guwahati on Thursday, chaired by AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi and attended by senior office bearers.

The meeting focused on finalising organisational strategy and outlining the party’s roadmap ahead of the elections. Party sources said a significant portion of the discussion centred on the proposed opposition unity initiative and the possible role AJP may play in forming a larger anti-BJP alliance. As part of its restructuring efforts, the party has decided to assign former MP Rajen Gohain a major organisational responsibility.

The AJP strongly criticised the ongoing Special Revision of the electoral roll, calling it a deliberate attempt to manipulate voter data ahead of the polls. Gogoi alleged that the process would allow thousands of non-resident voters into each constituency and claimed data from Bihar’s ongoing survey showed the exercise lacked credibility. He accused the ruling BJP of attempting to influence the election outcome by interfering with the electoral process.

Gogoi said a united opposition bloc could pose a serious challenge to the incumbent government and urged all parties opposed to the BJP to maintain discipline, restraint and a collective approach. He suggested that the possibility of toppling the BJP government was realistic if opposition solidarity remained strong.

During the meeting, Gogoi also raised questions over the circumstances surrounding the death of celebrated Assamese artist Zubeen Garg. He referenced repeated public statements by the Chief Minister and asked whether the alleged murder took place with his knowledge. His comments intensified ongoing political tension surrounding the case.

The AJP confirmed that another round of opposition discussions will be held soon to refine alliance arrangements and address unresolved issues. Gogoi said preliminary consultations have already begun and reiterated that public sentiment demands responsible action from opposition parties.

He added that political groups must avoid decisions that undermine public trust and emphasised the need for a united front with a clear objective as the election countdown continues.
