Guwahati, Jan 6: Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi on January 5 alleged that senior BJP leaders in Assam were conspiring to manipulate the ongoing Special Revision of electoral rolls to secure the party’s victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Speaking during a live interaction on social media, the Raijor Dal legislator claimed that on the evening of January 4 he came across a video conference involving Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia, state ministers, MLAs and other party functionaries. While the meeting was purportedly convened to discuss preparations for a wall-writing campaign scheduled for January 5, Gogoi alleged that the discussion focused extensively on the electoral rolls.
Gogoi said he was “shocked” by what he heard during the interaction and claimed that Dilip Saikia had instructed minister Ashok Singhal to take charge of voter list “corrections” in 60 Assembly constituencies with the aim of deleting the names of eligible voters.
He further alleged that BJP MLAs, district presidents and mandal presidents were directed to submit booth-wise lists of voters who did not support the BJP by January 12 so that their names could be removed from the electoral rolls. According to Gogoi, Saikia explicitly stated that responsibility for these constituencies had been handed over to Singhal to “correct” the voter lists.
Accusing the BJP of attempting to engineer the voter rolls to suit its political interests, Gogoi said the alleged actions amounted to a direct attack on democracy and the integrity of the electoral process. He challenged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to release the video recording of the January 4 conference if the allegations were untrue.
Gogoi also demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter and said he was willing to undergo a narco-analysis test if his claims were proven false. The BJP leadership has not yet responded to the allegations concerning the purported video conference and voter list deletions.
