Akhil Gogoi Opposes UCC Push, Urges Assam Government to Focus on Inflation and Public Hardship

Guwahati, May 22: Akhil Gogoi on May 22 criticised the BJP-led government over the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC), arguing that the immediate priority should be addressing rising prices and the economic difficulties faced by people in Assam.

Speaking to reporters at the Assam Legislative Assembly during the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected legislators, the Raijor Dal leader said the state was passing through a critical phase marked by inflation and financial pressure on ordinary citizens.

“This is the most crucial time for the people of Assam. We are facing price rise of essential goods and a major crisis,” Gogoi said.

He alleged that the government was moving in the wrong direction by attempting to introduce what he described as a “controversial” Uniform Civil Code bill.

According to Gogoi, the present situation called for measures aimed at easing public hardship rather than introducing legislation that could become a matter of debate and controversy.

“I think this is not the right time to table the UCC. This is the time to decide how the people of Assam can get relief from price rise and the ongoing crisis,” he said.

The Raijor Dal chief further stated that his party would continue to raise public concerns strongly within the Assembly.

Highlighting the party’s increased presence in the House, Gogoi said Raijor Dal now has two MLAs, compared to one in the previous Assembly term.

“Last time I was the only MLA from Raijor Dal. This time we have two MLAs and we will try our best to provide relief to the people of Assam,” he added.
