Akhil Gogoi’s Mother Priyada Gogoi Passes Away at 96 in Guwahati After Prolonged Illness

Guwahati, June 3: Priyada Gogoi, mother of Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, passed away in Guwahati on June 3 following a prolonged illness. She was 96.

Family sources said she had been suffering from age-related ailments for an extended period and breathed her last at around 6:20 am on Wednesday morning. Her demise has led to widespread condolences from political leaders, supporters and well-wishers across Assam.

Akhil Gogoi was present by his mother’s side at the time of her passing. The Sivasagar legislator, known for his activist background and strong political positions, described the loss as a deeply personal tragedy.

Her mortal remains are being taken to Selenghat near Mariani in Jorhat district, where the last rites will be performed in the presence of family members and relatives.

Priyada Gogoi had played a significant role in her son’s political journey, particularly during the 2021 Assam Assembly elections. At a time when Akhil Gogoi was in jail in connection with anti-CAA protests and contested the Sivasagar seat as an Independent candidate, she actively campaigned for him.

Despite her advanced age, she travelled across villages seeking support and appealed to voters to back her son’s candidature, while also calling for his release from custody. Her efforts were widely credited with mobilising public support during the election campaign.

Akhil Gogoi went on to win the Sivasagar seat in a landmark victory, later emerging as a prominent opposition voice in the Assam Legislative Assembly.

Political leaders across party lines have expressed grief over her passing and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
