Tamarhat: The Undivided Goalpara District unit of the All Koch-Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) has announced a three-hour sit-in protest at Chachal, Guwahati, on November 22, pressing for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the indigenous Koch-Rajbanshi community and the re-establishment of the historic Kamatapur state.
Addressing a press conference at the Tamarhat Press Club in Dhubri district, AKRSU district president Pradip Roy said that if the government fails to release the desired committee’s report by November 25, the organisation will intensify its movement by launching a statewide blockade. The proposed agitation would disrupt railway and national highway traffic at Srirampur in Kokrajhar district, he warned.
Roy lashed out at Aditya Khakhlari, a leader of the Tribal Sangha, and Tunkeswar Rabha, chairman of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, accusing them of opposing the Koch-Rajbanshi ST demand while serving BJP interests. He asserted that the Koch-Rajbanshi population stands at around 70 lakh, surpassing the state’s tribal population claimed by Khakhlari.

“If any ethnic conflict arises, the BJP government will be fully responsible,” Roy cautioned, urging the government to grant ST status to the Koch-Rajbanshi community before the 2026 Assembly elections.
The press meet was also attended by Rakesh Roy, General Secretary of the district unit, and other central AKRSU leaders.
