Guwahati: A fresh political controversy has erupted in Assam following the circulation of an audio clip on social media allegedly involving Palasbari BJP MLA Hemanga Thakuria, in which a voice is heard discussing commissions linked to land transactions. The clip has gone viral, triggering sharp political reactions and providing fresh ammunition to the opposition against the ruling BJP.
In the purported recording, the speaker allegedly refers to land brokering and commission demands amounting to several lakhs of rupees, including a claim of charging ₹1 lakh per bigha of land. The voice also repeatedly mentions personal “benefit” and expresses an ambition to continue as an MLA for decades, raising serious questions over ethics and accountability in public life.
Reacting strongly, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi launched a scathing attack on the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government, accusing it of fostering corruption and lawlessness in the state. “Another hour, another controversial BJP leader close to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is in the news for the wrong reasons,” Gogoi wrote on social media platform X.

Escalating his criticism, Gogoi alleged that Assam is witnessing “gundaraj” under the present regime, citing alleged irregularities in land deals and other syndicates. He asserted that the Congress would oust the BJP from power, reiterating the slogan #NatunAxom.
Meanwhile, attempts to contact MLA Hemanga Thakuria for his response proved unsuccessful. As the authenticity of the audio clip remains unverified, the episode has intensified political sparring in the state, with the opposition demanding accountability and the ruling party dismissing the allegations as politically motivated.
