Ambedkar Jayanti Observed with Tribute and Student Felicitation in West Karbi Anglong

West Karbi Anglong, April 16: The 135th birth anniversary of B. R. Ambedkar was observed with enthusiasm and reverence at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhawan in Kheroni Charali on Thursday, with community members gathering to pay homage to the architect of the Indian Constitution.

The programme, held between 9 am and 2 pm, was jointly organised by local bodies representing Scheduled Caste communities, including the Anusuchit Jati Parishad, Robidas Sanmilan, and the Anusuchit Jati Yuva Chhatra Sanstha. The event began with the hoisting of the ceremonial flag, followed by floral tributes and candle lighting before a portrait of Ambedkar.

Presided over by Prem Chand Ram, the gathering reflected on Ambedkar’s enduring legacy and contributions to social justice. A key highlight of the event was the felicitation of meritorious student Ajoy Ram, who was honoured with a certificate and a traditional gamusa for securing 79 per cent in the HSLC examination, drawing appreciation from attendees.

Addressing the gathering, Kapili College Vice Principal Jeetendra Harijan spoke on Ambedkar’s life and his role in advancing the rights of marginalised communities. He emphasised that despite facing systemic discrimination, Ambedkar emerged as one of India’s foremost intellectuals and reformers through determination and scholarship. He also underscored Ambedkar’s role in embedding the principles of equality, liberty and justice within the constitutional framework.

Several community leaders and educators were present at the event, which saw participation from more than 60 people. The programme concluded with a renewed pledge among attendees to uphold Ambedkar’s ideals of social equity and empowerment.
