Shillong, June 3: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair the 73rd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong on June 4, where discussions will centre on key development sectors including tourism, agriculture, horticulture, investment promotion and regional connectivity.
The meeting is being convened as part of coordinated efforts to accelerate growth across the Northeast, with a pre-session review held on June 3 assessing flagship initiatives such as bamboo and agarwood development, the Ashtalakshmi Darshan project, and other programmes aimed at strengthening socio-economic progress in the region. The plenary will also evaluate the work of Chief Minister-led high-level task forces constituted to drive sector-specific development.
According to an official statement, presentations during the session will cover a wide range of themes including tourism expansion, agricultural and horticultural growth, investment promotion strategies, and efforts to achieve self-reliance in milk, eggs, fish and meat production. Infrastructure development, economic corridor projects, sports promotion, and the advancement of handloom and handicrafts are also expected to feature prominently in the deliberations.
A significant focus of the meeting will be the North East Vision Plan 2047, a long-term roadmap aimed at transforming the region into a hub of economic growth, connectivity, innovation, sustainability and cultural development by the centenary year of India’s Independence. The NEC will also review key initiatives under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, including outcomes of investment summits, bankers’ conclaves, logistics projects and youth-oriented programmes.
The session will be attended by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region and NEC Vice-Chairman Jyotiraditya Scindia, Governors and Chief Ministers of all eight Northeastern states, along with senior officials from both the Centre and state governments. The NEC, established under the North Eastern Council Act, 1971, continues to function as the apex regional planning body coordinating development across the region.
The discussions are expected to strengthen inter-state cooperation and align development priorities as part of broader efforts to enhance infrastructure, investment and sustainable growth in the Northeast.
