Amritprabha Mahanta, an accused in the death case of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, appeared before a fast-track court on Wednesday, October 14, a day after her release on bail, as allegations also emerged that her lawyer confronted and threatened journalists at the court premises.
Mahanta was directed to appear before the court following her release from Haflong sub-jail on Tuesday, October 13. She is the first accused to secure bail in the main case concerning Garg’s death.
According to Special Public Prosecutor Ziaul Kamar, the Gauhati High Court granted Mahanta bail on October 9 against a bond of Rs 50,000 and two sureties of the same amount. The court heard arguments over several days before reserving its order and announcing the decision.
Meanwhile, Mahanta’s lawyer, Anand Kumar Bhuyan, was allegedly seen confronting journalists and threatening them when she encountered media personnel at the court entrance. The allegations regarding his conduct have not been independently verified.
Mahanta had been lodged at Haflong sub-jail with fellow accused Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, a former bandmate of Garg. The other accused are lodged at Tamulpur jail.
Earlier, two of Garg’s personal security officers had secured bail in a separate case involving financial transactions, which is distinct from the main death case.
