Anal Naga students’ union flags teacher shortage at Chandel school

IMPHAL, Oct 24: The Anal Lenruwl Tangpi (Anal Naga Students’ Union) has criticised the alleged delay in addressing a shortage of teaching staff at Chakpikarong Higher Secondary School in Manipur’s Chandel district, claiming that repeated appeals to the authorities have yielded no concrete action.

The union said the government-run school currently had 63 students but only five teachers, raising concerns over the adequacy of academic support at an institution serving the Anal Naga community as well as neighbouring Meitei and Kuki communities.

Highlighting the school’s role in providing education across communities, the union said the enrolment reflected public confidence in the institution despite a growing preference among parents for private schools. It warned that the staffing shortage could undermine students’ academic progress and future prospects.

The union said it had approached the district administration on August 27, 2026, seeking intervention. According to the organisation, the Chandel Deputy Commissioner subsequently directed the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) to write to the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), Chakpikarong, who holds additional charge, requesting a field inspection and a detailed report on the school’s condition.

However, the union alleged that the inspection had not taken place and that it had not received a copy of the report. It said the absence of the report had delayed further action to resolve the shortage.

Seeking clarification on the status of the Deputy Commissioner’s directive, the union questioned whether the ADM had failed to formally communicate the instruction to the SDO or whether the SDO had ignored it, if the communication had been issued.

The organisation criticised the handling of the matter, arguing that the alleged administrative delays had hindered efforts to address an issue directly affecting students’ education.

It urged the authorities to take immediate steps to fill the staffing gap and ensure that the school had adequate teaching personnel. The union said timely intervention was essential to protect students’ academic interests and enable the institution to continue serving communities across Chandel district.

The district officials concerned had not responded to the allegations contained in the union’s statement.
