Army Personnel Save Woman from Drowning in Brahmaputra Near Saraighat Bridge

Guwahati, Jan 16: Quick action by Army personnel averted a possible tragedy after a woman fell into the Brahmaputra river in Guwahati on Wednesday evening, officials said on January 16. The rescue was carried out by soldiers deployed along the riverbank as part of routine operational duties.

According to a defence spokesperson, personnel of the 236 Inland Water Transport Operational Unit of the Engineers were stationed on their marine crafts near Sadilapur Ghat when they heard urgent cries for help coming from beneath the Saraighat Bridge. Realising the gravity of the situation, the team responded without delay.

A safety boat positioned at the ghat was immediately launched, and the soldiers swiftly navigated through the river towards the woman. She was pulled out of the water and provided prompt first aid onboard the rescue craft, helping stabilise her condition.

The spokesperson said the timely intervention of the Army team prevented a potential loss of life. The rescued woman was later identified as a resident of Ullubari in Guwahati.

After ensuring her safety and administering initial medical assistance, the Army personnel handed the woman over to the local police for further necessary procedures, the spokesperson added.
