Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bosiram Siram has termed the 2016 demonetisation a “misguided and destructive” policy, alleging that it caused deep economic distress and widespread suffering among ordinary citizens.
In a statement issued on Friday, Siram appealed to the people of Arunachal Pradesh to observe November 8 as Black Day, in remembrance of those who, he said, lost their lives and livelihoods as a result of the move. He urged citizens to use the occasion to reaffirm their commitment to protecting economic stability and ensuring democratic accountability.
Criticising the government’s decision, the Congress leader said demonetisation failed to achieve its declared goals of curbing black money, ending corruption, halting terror financing, or eliminating counterfeit currency. “Demonetisation did not strike black money; it struck the backbone of India’s real economy — the poor and the working class,” he stated.
Siram further accused the government of inflicting long-term damage on India’s informal sector, claiming that small businesses, daily wage earners, and farmers were the worst affected. He said the policy left a lasting scar on the rural economy, eroding public trust and economic confidence across the country.
