The Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, marked World Diabetes Day 2025 by launching the State Treatment Protocol for Diabetes Mellitus along with updated Standard Treatment Protocols for Hypertension. The documents were formally released by Health Commissioner Pawan Kumar Sain, IAS, and Health Secretary Vivek H.P., IAS.
Speaking at the event, the Health Commissioner said the introduction of uniform, evidence-based protocols marked a major step in strengthening the state’s response to non-communicable diseases. He noted that the guidelines would support consistent clinical management, improve treatment outcomes, and ensure continuity of care across Health and Wellness Centres, Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres, and District Hospitals.
The Health Secretary acknowledged the work of the State Expert Committee, which included Director of Medical Education Dr. Hage Ambing, TRIHMS Medicine Head Dr. Taso Beyong, Community Medicine Head Dr. Anoop Dev, and other specialists. He said their technical assessment and contextual insights formed the foundation of the treatment protocols, which were adapted from national guidelines to suit Arunachal Pradesh’s specific health needs.
The state has witnessed a steady increase in diabetes, hypertension, and associated complications in recent years. While screening under the NP-NCD programme has improved early detection, the absence of updated, uniform guidelines had led to variations in treatment pathways.
The newly released protocols aim to close these gaps by setting out step-wise treatment algorithms, ensuring rational drug use, strengthening referral and follow-up systems, improving data accuracy in the NCD portal, and promoting standardised management across all cadres of health staff.
Officials said that in a state marked by difficult terrain, scattered settlements, and limited access to tertiary care, early intervention and consistent management at primary and secondary health facilities were essential to prevent life-threatening complications such as kidney failure, stroke, cardiovascular disease, and vision loss.
The launch reaffirms the government’s commitment to strengthening NCD services, reducing premature mortality, and improving the overall health and well-being of the people of Arunachal Pradesh.
