Asam Sahitya Sabha Marks Centenary of Chandrakanta Handique Heritage Bhawan

Sivasagar: The Asam Sahitya Sabha on Sunday celebrated the centenary of the historic Chandrakanta Handique Heritage Bhawan at its Cherasali campus in Sivasagar with a vibrant observance of the traditional ‘Sowag Tola’ ceremony—a ritual performed by women during a bridegroom’s arrival at the bride’s home. The programme was jointly organised by the Asam Sahitya Sabha and the Sivasagar Zila Sahitya Sabha, drawing a large gathering of writers, scholars, and cultural enthusiasts.

Presiding over the meeting, Dr. Basanta Kumar Goswami, President of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, announced that the Sabha would soon publish ‘Indrakanta Byakaran’ (Grammar)—fulfilling the long-cherished dream of philanthropist Radhakanta Handique, the donor of the heritage building. “Commemorating the hundred years of this Bhawan is not just a celebration but a tribute to a benefactor who shaped Assam’s cultural identity,” Dr. Goswami remarked.

District Development Commissioner Sameeran Bora delivered the welcome address, while Dr. Jyotirekha Hazarika presented the keynote lecture.

Earlier in the day, Jogesh Kishor Phukan, President of Sivasagar Zila Sahitya Sabha, hoisted the Sabha flag, followed by floral tributes and a cultural procession from Bir Lachit Borphukan College.

The day-long programme concluded with the rendition of the Jatiya Sangeet, marking a memorable milestone in the literary and cultural journey of Assam.
