Assam Accounts for 90% of India’s Muga Silk Production, Says CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, March 3: Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 3 said Assam produces 90 per cent of India’s Muga silk and 65 per cent of its Eri silk, underscoring the State’s dominance in the country’s sericulture sector.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister stated that with 90 per cent of the nation’s Muga output, Assam remains the global hub of the iconic silk variety. He added that the State’s Muga and Eri industries sustain livelihoods, strengthen the rural economy and form key pillars of what he described as “Atmanirbhar Assam”.

Highlighting the importance of sericulture, Sarma said the State government has undertaken multiple initiatives to support and expand the industry. He noted that the silk sector continues to generate employment, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, contributing significantly to income generation and economic stability.

Muga silk, known for its natural golden sheen and durability, is unique to Assam and holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Eri silk, often referred to as “peace silk”, is also widely produced in the State and remains integral to Assam’s traditional handloom sector.

The Chief Minister’s remarks come as the government intensifies efforts to strengthen indigenous industries and promote self-reliance in textiles and handloom production across the State.
