Nalbari, May 22: The Nalbari district administration has approved the construction of a 5-kilometre Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) along National Highway 27, paving the way for Assam’s second such infrastructure project aimed at strengthening strategic capabilities in the Northeast region.
Officials said the proposed facility will transform a section of the highway between Tihu and Madhapur into an auxiliary runway designed to support both military transport aircraft and civilian commercial flights during emergency situations.
The project is intended to serve as an alternative logistics and operational base during national security contingencies, natural disasters and other emergency situations requiring the rapid movement of personnel and critical supplies.
Authorities stated that the proposed runway will be developed according to military operational standards and will include reinforced infrastructure capable of supporting heavy aircraft operations.
The National Highways Authority of India is working in coordination with local authorities to implement zoning measures and maintain designated no-construction areas along the approach corridors to ensure operational safety and smooth aircraft movement.
The initiative follows the operationalisation of Assam’s first emergency landing facility near Dibrugarh and forms part of broader efforts to enhance India’s strategic infrastructure and emergency response preparedness across the Northeast.
