Guwahati: The Assam State Chapter of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) has brought laurels to the state by winning the Best State Chapter Award 2025 at the 85th Annual Conference of the Association of Surgeons of India, held in Kolkata from December 17 to 20. This marks the third consecutive year that the Assam chapter has received the prestigious national honour.
The award was conferred in recognition of the Chapter’s exemplary academic initiatives, training programmes and community service activities carried out throughout 2025 under the leadership of Chairman Dr Dhirendra Nath Choudhury, Professor of Surgery at Tezpur Medical College, and Honorary Secretary Dr Nilutpal Bhattacharjee, Professor of Surgery at Jorhat Medical College. Adding to the accolades, Dr Seema Rekha Devi, Senior Plastic Surgeon from Guwahati, was honoured with the ASI Best Social Service Award 2025 during the conference.

Established in 1990, the Assam State Chapter of ASI has grown to include 10 branches and over 550 members across the state. In 2025, the Chapter conducted 11 public health education programmes, performed 71 free surgical operations and provided free health check-ups to 846 patients. It also organised ATLS and BLS training programmes, radio awareness talks, charity visits, tree plantation drives and 12 blood donation camps, collecting 283 blood bags.
The Chapter remained equally active on the academic front, organising conferences, workshops and competitions for postgraduate students. The achievement reflects the sustained commitment of the Assam ASI Chapter towards excellence in surgical education and community service.
