Guwahati, Feb 16: The Budget Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly commenced on February 16 against the backdrop of protests by Congress legislators demanding justice for late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. The four-day sitting marks the final session of the current Assembly term ahead of the upcoming state elections.
Members of the Indian National Congress staged a demonstration, calling for a fast-track trial in connection with Garg’s death on September 19, 2025. Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia said the matter is sub judice and should not be politicised, while emphasising that the singer’s family has sought expedited judicial proceedings.
Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika outlined the agenda for the session, stating that the Governor would deliver the customary address on the opening day, followed by discussions. The Finance Minister is slated to table the Vote on Account, or interim budget, on the second day, which will also be taken up for debate before the House concludes its proceedings.
Minister Nandita Garlosa expressed hope that the concluding session of the term would meet public expectations, noting that several significant decisions had been taken during the Assembly’s tenure.
On the treasury benches, BJP MLA Manab Deka confirmed that the Governor’s address and the interim budget would be the central focus of the session. He criticised the Opposition’s approach while defending Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Meanwhile, All India United Democratic Front MLA Aminul Islam said his party would raise several issues during the session, accusing the government of pursuing divisive policies. He also referred to a hearing in the Supreme Court of India regarding petitions seeking an FIR and a Special Investigation Team probe against the Chief Minister.
With elections approaching, the session is expected to see intense exchanges, as it represents the final budget proceedings of the current Assembly term.
