Assam Assembly Poll: Congress Steps Up Groundwork in Kaliabor

Nagaon: The Indian National Congress has begun sharpening its focus on the 57 No. Kaliabor Assembly Constituency, signaling an early and determined bid to reclaim the seat from the ruling alliance. In a key move towards strengthening its grassroots base, the Congress organised an important organisational meeting on February 2, at Kunwaritol. The meeting brought together party workers from 22 Gaon Panchayats under the West Kaliabor and Kaliabor Block Congress Committees. Senior leaders and representatives from the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and the Nagaon District Congress Committee were also present, underlining a coordinated effort to energise the party structure at the constituency level.

The gathering witnessed the participation of several Congress leaders viewed as potential ticket aspirants from Kaliabor, including Pradip Barua, Meghnath Chhetri, Manabjyoti Mahanta and Manik Bora. Their presence reflected growing internal momentum as the party initiated early groundwork for candidate selection and voter mobilisation.

Party sources said the Congress is preparing to take on the ruling alliance by highlighting what it terms as “overall development failures” in Kaliabor during the tenure of sitting alliance MLA Keshab Mahanta. These issues, leaders said, will form the core of the party’s campaign narrative and will be taken directly to the grassroots through sustained outreach programmes in the coming months. The Kunwaritol meeting is being seen as a significant first step in the Congress’s broader strategy to revive its organisational strength and rebuild public connect in Kaliabor ahead of the 2026 polls.
