Anti-erosion work has begun to protect the Rangagara Tea Estate factory in Assam’s Tinsukia district after the issue was raised in the State Legislative Assembly, with authorities deploying geo-bags to reinforce the vulnerable riverbank.
Makum MLA Sanjoy Kishan said the factory had faced the threat of riverbank erosion for a long time. He said he had raised the matter in the Assembly and urged the government to resolve land compensation-related issues so that protection work could begin without further delay.
The Water Resources Department has now started the project under the supervision of Water Resources Minister Sushanta Borgohain. Geo-bags are being used to strengthen the eroding riverbank and prevent further damage to the tea estate factory, which has remained exposed to the advancing river for several years.
Kishan said erosion-control work had commenced following the Assembly intervention and expressed hope that the project would provide a lasting solution to the long-standing problem and bring relief to residents in the area.
Local residents have welcomed the start of the work, hoping the anti-erosion measures will protect both the tea estate and nearby habitations from further damage. The project is expected to be implemented in phases.
