Assam BJP Claims State Politics Has Become ‘Opposition-less’ After Rajya Sabha Poll Developments

Guwahati, March 5: The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday, March 5, asserted that the state’s political scenario has effectively turned “opposition-less,” alleging that rival parties avoided contesting the recent Rajya Sabha elections in Assam 2026 despite three seats falling vacant.

In a statement, Assam BJP spokesperson Kamal Kumar Medhi criticised opposition parties, claiming their much-publicised alliance exists only in media discussions and has not translated into practical coordination on the ground. He said the failure of opposition parties to field candidates in the Rajya Sabha election revealed what he described as their lack of unity and political determination.

Taking a direct swipe at the Indian National Congress, Medhi said the party’s repeated slogan of “There will be a fight” had proven meaningless in the face of the recent political developments. According to him, the Congress and other opposition forces did not even attempt to contest the election and effectively chose to remain absent from the political contest.

Medhi pointed out that although it was widely expected that the ruling alliance would secure the first two Rajya Sabha seats, the third seat could still have served as an opportunity for opposition parties to demonstrate their unity and political resolve. Even if victory was uncertain, contesting the seat could have sent a message to voters about the seriousness of the opposition alliance, he said.

He added that the opposition’s decision not to file nomination papers has exposed the current state of opposition politics in Assam. The BJP leader further argued that the development raises questions about the ability of opposition parties to build a workable alliance ahead of the state’s upcoming Assembly elections.

According to Medhi, the episode surrounding the Rajya Sabha polls reflects the growing political dominance of the BJP in Assam and highlights the widening gap between the ruling party and its political rivals in the state.
