Guwahati, July 2: The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government will present its first full budget of the second consecutive term on July 10, with Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah set to table the Annual Financial Statement for the financial year 2026-27 in the Assam Legislative Assembly.
According to the provisional business schedule issued by the Assembly Secretariat, the budget session will begin on July 6 and conclude on July 31. The session will comprise 16 sittings, during which the government is expected to take up key financial and legislative business.
The upcoming budget assumes significance as it will be the first comprehensive financial roadmap of the new government after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returned to power with a decisive mandate in the recent Assembly elections.
Before the polls, the state government had operated on a vote-on-account budget presented on February 17 by the then Finance Minister Ajanta Neog. The interim budget proposed an outlay of Rs 62,294.78 crore to meet routine government expenditure until the presentation of the full budget after the elections.
The full budget follows the NDA’s commanding performance in the Assembly elections, where the alliance won 102 of the 126 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 82 seats, registering its first-ever single-party majority in Assam, while its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), won 10 seats each.
In the opposition benches, the Congress emerged as the largest party with 19 seats, followed by Raijor Dal and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) with two seats each, while the Trinamool Congress secured one seat in the Assembly.
