Guwahati, Feb 8: The Assam Cabinet on February 7 approved the constitution of the 8th Assam Pay Commission, setting the stage for a revision of salaries, allowances and service conditions of state government employees.
Briefing the media after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the panel, to be called the 8th Assam Pay Commission, 2026, will examine the existing pay structure and recommend suitable changes in line with the state’s financial capacity. He said the commission would also review allowances and other service-related benefits before submitting its recommendations.
In a separate decision aimed at boosting the education sector, the cabinet approved the allotment of land for several educational institutions across the state. The move is expected to facilitate infrastructure development and strengthen access to education in different regions of Assam.
The cabinet also gave its nod to the revised Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Policy under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Officials said the updated policy has been aligned with the latest central government guidelines and focuses on improving maintenance systems and ensuring the long-term sustainability of drinking water supply schemes.
The decisions taken at the meeting are expected to provide relief to government employees, support educational infrastructure growth and enhance the effectiveness of water supply projects across Assam.
