Assam Police Top Officials Reach Singapore to Probe Mysterious Death of Cultural Icon Zubeen Garg

Singapore/Guwahati: A high-level team from the Assam Police has arrived in Singapore to launch a detailed on-site investigation into the mysterious death of renowned cultural icon and singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away in the island nation on September 19. The move comes in response to massive public outrage and the registration of over 60 First Information Reports (FIRs) across Assam, all demanding a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the celebrated artiste’s demise.

The investigation is being conducted by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam Police.

Representing the state in Singapore are two senior officials: CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, who is heading the SIT, and Titabor Co-District SP Tarun Goel, a core member of the investigative group. While specific details of their activities remain confidential, sources familiar with the case confirmed that a crucial part of the visit involves inspecting the “place of occurrence”—the exact location where Garg reportedly drowned. The officials aim to meticulously link the chain of events leading up to his death with the physical site.

Beyond inspecting the scene, the Assam Police team is slated to coordinate closely with Singaporean authorities. This collaboration is essential for gathering critical forensic and circumstantial evidence, as well as examining all relevant medical and legal documents pertaining to the incident. Zubeen Garg had been in Singapore to represent India’s Northeast region at the 4th edition of the North East India Festival when his sudden death occurred during a swimming session. His passing has since triggered widespread public demand for answers, fueling the ongoing social media campaign, #JusticeForZubeenGarg.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma reassured the public of the government’s commitment to transparency and justice. Briefing the media on Sunday, Sarma confirmed that the state government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure justice for the musician, whose loss has deeply affected millions of fans. The Chief Minister stated that the SIT will share detailed findings with the public upon their return from Singapore. “The SIT will brief the media after their return and submit their findings to the appropriate authorities,” Sarma stated, emphasizing the commitment to a complete and open investigation.
