Guwahati, March 17: A Class 10 student from Moran died by suicide on March 17 after reportedly losing his family’s savings on online gaming, raising fresh concerns over digital addiction among minors.
The incident occurred in Bahoni Pathar village under Khowang in Dibrugarh district, where Uttal Gogoi, who was appearing for his board examinations, allegedly took the extreme step inside his residence.
According to family members, the student was academically bright and had been provided with a mobile phone to support his studies despite financial constraints. However, he had reportedly been using the device for online gaming without their knowledge. Sources said he had earlier withdrawn money from his mother’s bank account on two occasions for gaming purposes and had been counselled by his family.
In the latest instance, he is believed to have spent around ₹9,000 from funds received under the Orunodoi Scheme, which is meant to support economically vulnerable households. The loss reportedly came to light when his parents attempted to withdraw money for essential needs and found the account empty.
Distressed over the situation, the student reportedly left behind a note before taking his life.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding unregulated access to mobile devices among minors and the risks associated with online gaming, particularly in financially vulnerable families.
