Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on July 31 announced a series of relief and rehabilitation measures for families affected by the recent floods in Upper Assam, including immediate financial assistance, school restoration support and a time-bound damage assessment.
Sarma said flood-affected families will begin receiving financial assistance of Rs 15,000 from August 2 or 3 as part of the state’s relief initiative.
He also announced that a comprehensive damage assessment will commence on August 7 in the four worst-affected districts of Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat. The survey has been directed to be completed within 15 days to facilitate rehabilitation and compensation measures.
To minimise disruption to education, the Chief Minister said the government has released Rs 8 crore for school uniforms, while free textbooks have already been dispatched to enable students to resume their studies.
Schools affected by flooding and mud accumulation will receive financial assistance ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh each for cleaning and restoration work, he said.
Sarma added that the government is planning to reopen schools in the four flood-affected Upper Assam districts from August 9, subject to improvement in local conditions.
As part of the long-term recovery plan, the Chief Minister said a team of ministers will leave for Upper Assam on Friday to supervise relief and rehabilitation efforts. He also announced that special development packages would be prepared for Charaideo and Sivasagar districts to restore damaged roads and other critical infrastructure.
The announcements form part of the Assam government’s ongoing efforts to accelerate relief, rehabilitation and the restoration of normalcy in the flood-affected districts.
